Call for cosmetic op ads to display risk logo
A patient safety campaigner has launched a petition proposing that cosmetic surgery and non-surgical aesthetic adverts display a risk logo.
Dawn Knight, writing on Linkedin, asked for support saying: ‘For many years, I’ve campaigned for better regulation to protect the public when it comes to cosmetic and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. This petition is (a) call for a risk logo on all advertising for such procedures and treatments.
‘To (sic) often we see predatory and coercive illegal ads, especially on social media, with no mention of the risk, possible complications or long-term financial commitment.
‘The logo I hope would allow the public to pause and research further the procedure they may choose and encourage more ethical advertising from practitioners.’
If the petition, which can be seen at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/617097, gains 10,000 signatures, then the Government will make a response.
With 100,000 signatures, the petition would be considered for debate in Parliament.
The petition claims: ‘The public are at risk when viewing ads for Non Surgical Aesthetic Procedures and Cosmetic Surgery.
‘Increasing reports on complications and injuries mean that a risk logo would remind the public to research the procedure, related risks and complications about the treatment they may be considering.’
The cut-off date for supporters to sign the petition is 27 November 2022.
